How to Dress for an interview

Whether you like it or not, the very first thing you are judged on when you walk into a room is how you have presented yourself, i.e. dressed. This is even more daunting if you are going for an interview, as this could mean whether you are taken seriously or not. I am at a stage in my young adult life, where I am having to go for interviews and trying to make professionals take me seriously. This is where the power of Fashion comes in. Having got this far in the process, the person on the other side of the emails actually wants to meet in you! This is your time to shine and become the main star of the show. The last thing you want to do is rock up in an outfit that you wore in sixth form, about 6 years ago that is still lying around in your cupboard. You want, no you NEED something that is new, up to date that is fashionable, modern and will show off that you are mature but also impressionable. You may say, ‘But different jobs have different formalities in how smart you should dress? ’And my answer would be, ‘Well yes, but…’, this post is about the generalisation of how to be fashionable but also smart. As lets be honest, whether you are going for an interview for a Directorship, Internship or Assistant, you need to dress to impress… And in my option that means being smart in your decision making.

While reading up on articles of what companies think you should wear to interviews (in particular for fashion internships), the main focus was on the colour of clothing. Most companies want you to appear smart but most importantly not arrive and be distracted by what you are saying due to the traffic cone you have on. Therefore, I have taken this into consideration and have applied a neutral pallet that should wow without the bright colours. I believe that you can bring out all of your hidden highlighter colour clothing, once the job is firmly secured and they can't be scared off.

So sorry boys, as I, myself, a woman I will be focusing on the female. I have focused on a few ideas of what I think can help you appear professional but also with the personal touch. The pieces that I have picked, have been categorised into two sections a) high-street or b) high-end, depending on what your budget is.

The Dress:

Zara polka dot dress 39.95 Euro.

This long polka dot dress is a perfect take on pencil dress. I would layer this with a turtle-neck of your preferred colour. And you can wear it in the summer months too.

Topshop Slip Dress - £39

I definitely get sophisticated grown up school girl vibes from this dress. Again like the Zara dress, I love the element of layering to heighten the outfit.

Adriana Degreas - Millie Punti Deep V-Neck Dress - £1,125.

I love the colour for this dress, and yes the designer has paired it with summer shoes, but I think dressing this up in black heeled boots and even layering a turtle-neck under neath can appear slightly more smart casual. The V-neck cut of the shoulder to sleeves and built in belt are just to die for. One would definitely stand out for the right reasons.

Alexander McQueen - Long sleeved pleated dress - £1,207

This gorgeous all black dress may simple on first glance, but the layering of the slip dress with the sheer pleated skirt a subtle dramatic look that is going to impress. You really don't need anything to vamp this outfit up. It does all the work on its own

The Trousers:

High- Street

Mango - Straight Suit Trousers on Sale from £35.99 to £15.99.

The short legged flared bottoms, make this trouser look different yet typical for an office look. The added line/seam down the front gives off an effortlessly sophisticated look.

Whistles - Mari Heart Wide Leg Trousers - £129

These wide leg trousers are flattering but comfortable and are a look all on their own. From a distance it looks like polka dot, but the heart pattern is a fun addition that will put flavour into your outfit.

High - End

Chloè - Straight pleated corduroy cotton blend trousers - £537

Christmas may be over but these festive trousers with their rich and luxurious material will certainly not go out of fashion. They really are beautiful and if you want more than a black pair of trousers these are definitely worth investigating.

Gloria Coelho - Tailored Trousers - Sale for £136

As stated in the name they are tailored looking trousers, and my god do they look like they fit well. The navy colour is nice and different to a typical black suit trouser. They also make your legs look 3 meters long… so i’ll take 3 please.

The Skirt:

Realisation Par - The Naomi - Wild Things - £137

The famous, celebrity loved and all round popular skirt of 2018. I think that it still holds its own and whether you wear it in summer or winter it is a stylish and fun look to an interview. I would style with black top and tights. Now that animal has come into fashion in a much more classy and minimal way, this piece basically bold and timeless.

ASOS Design - Mono Leopard Print Pleated Satin Midi - £35

Sticking with the animal print theme, this lovely skirt is floaty and is another great way to spice up a very normal look into something different and slightly daring, shall we say.

High - End

Marc Jacobs - Pleated Abstract Diamond Silk Skirt - £289

In keeping with a patterned skirt, this diamond print is minimal but also stands out. It is a shorter style skirt but still modest and flattering. I would wear this look with healed boots, and then you are onto a winner.

Ellery - Asymmetric mid-skirt £797

The variety of hight for this skirt are not only stunning but also incredibly flattering. This is high-waisted fitting with the buckles, means that this simple black skirt changes the way you look with every step. This may look more on the smart side, but it defiantly a forever piece that will keep on giving.

The Top

High - Street

Marks and Spencer - Ribbed Black Polo-Neck Jumper - £17.99

This has to be one of THE MOST practical tops you can own. I own one and wish I owned more. Not only is it super comfy but you can layer and dress with any outfit. Oh, and they sell it in 9 other colours as well.

Topshop - The Side Blouse - £29

The fabric on this blouse is something to drool over. The buttons down the front as well as the ribbon on the side add a detail that is minimal but effective. It is smart but casual all at the same time.

Kenzo - Kimono Shirt - Sale from £223 to £112

This well fitting shirt incorporates a voluptuous sleeve that changes the shape of the shirt into something extremely high-fashion. I would personally tuck in the shirt to a skirt or trousers to fit it to your body. This shirt is so much more than a simple white shirt. Adding some office pizzaz.

Karl Lagerfeld - Logo Trim Wrap Blouse - £195

This 100% silk blouse is a lovely addition to an outfit. The contemporary belt style in the side, pulls the blouse into your waist while vamping up a smart look. This is seriously cool and I have officially added it to my birthday list.

The Shoes

High - Street

Kurt Geiger - Sicily 2 - Sale from £139 to £99

Such a classic take on the healed Chelsea boot. I have a variation of these and wear them to interviews, work and also on a night out. They literally go with any outfit.

Zara - Leather Track Sole Ankle Boots - £60

Add this chunky rocker vibe to your look. I love the slightly gothic addition this will bring with the long zip down the front. Although this is quite different, it is still smart and sleek, they are my new favourite black booties!

High - End

Albedo - Ankle Boots - £153

It is such a fun take on a simple black boot, but with a chunky cut out heel. This small detail is enough to change your opinion of a simple black boot forever.

Dorateymur - Square Toe Ankle Boots - Sale from £401 to £281

The style is slightly higher up your ankle, with a sock like fit to it. The suede material and the detail on the ankle is effective and chic. These will literally lead you to success. For a heads up, this brand sell that chicest office wear that will suit any style.

There are literally 100s of thousands of different options and variations of looks you can wear to an interview. But like anything, if there is one thing you want to take away from this article, it is that these are just ideas and you can change and incorporate your own style and taste. While having to go for interviews is something that is stressful and we all dread slightly, even if it is for your dream job, at least if you love what you are wearing and feel smart and professional, you feel like you can accomplish anything.
