Re-creating Marianne's looks from Normal People

Updated: Jun 16, 2020

Following up from my previous article (if you haven't read it please do, I break down Marianne's style evolution) it only seems fitting to re-create my favourite Marianne looks. From the iconic black dress worn in Italy, to the most delicious burgundy velvet jacket, I have scoured the internet so you don't have to in search of the best dupes. Enjoy!

Casual wear while at school:

Effortlessly cool and ready for any task, I adore this simple black jumper under a vintage dungaree, and even though we never see her shoes in this scene, I can just tell that converses are the perfect accompaniment.

First year at uni:

One of my favourite looks in her first year, Marianne is always so effortlessly cool and appears dressed up, but never too dressed up. Side note, searching for a velvet jacket shouldn't be that hard, however as we approach summer all of our favourite high-street brands are not producing them. If you are after something cheaper wait until the winter months roll in, however if you are wanting to invest in a timeless piece, this Temperley London blazer is a fantastic purchase.

As I mentioned in my last article, this episode sent my bookclub's Whatsapp chat into overdrive. We were all furiously typing how madly in love we were with the black dress Marianne wears on her trip, and whether or not her 1960's style shift dress would fit us if we could find it. I spent a longggg time trying to find out where this exact black dress was from, but sadly the secret of its origin has not been revealed yet, so in the mean time I found a very good dupe of it from Zara.

From the serene and warm setting of Northern Italy in episode eight, we are blasted into the cold and snowy setting in Sweden for episode nine. Like the Italy black dress, I would pay to know where this magnificent coat is from, while the coat is a good but expensive alternative, I could be certain these Arket boots are the actual ones she is wearing.

Last year at uni:

Finally, in the last year of university we see a content and happy Marianne, as always she is proving how effortlessly chic and sophisticated she is, but without trying too hard. Also note, she doesn't wear much jewellery other than her signature ring, and some drop earrings. I opted for this Pixie Market cut out top instead of the chocker version we see on Marianne, as I think it is more wearable and timeless.
