Summer dresses that are perfect for lockdown - 20 under £270
Time to pull off those tracksuits and slip into something lighter with more colour.
Summer has arrived, and thankfully so has the gloriously hot and sunny weather. Beaches, parks and public spaces have started opening up, allowing us to leave the loungewear at home as we take the dive to explore from beyond our front door. The need for an easy, single pull on dress has proved essential as we make the transition to outdoor life. When I imagine what I want out of a ‘lounge wear dress’, I envision a dress that you can roll out of bed in, and start your day looking effortlessly stylish. The sort of dress you wear on holiday, that you can leave next to your towel while you go for a swim, and when its lunch time you can quickly slip over of your swimwear and look beautiful, while also being comfortable (similar to Marianne’s Italy dresses we have all fallen in love with). Although the reality is slightly bleaker, quarantine at home, but who says that we cannot dress for the holiday we wish we were on?
(L-R SS20 M Missoni, SS20 Cecilie Bahnsen)
The lounge wear dress can take the form of a variety of different shapes and colours. SS20 is the perfect place to pull inspiration on what style and look you are going for. M Missoni maxi dress has the perfect combination of floral and chiffon fabric - the kind that hangs wonderfully while also opening up the dress to allowing movement, while complimenting your figure. On the other hand Cecilie Bahnsen 's puff sleeve romantic dress (a style we have all come to know and love) steers away from loose fabric, bold patterns and colours, towards a neutral tone and a structured shape that takes the main stage.
Emily Cronin, Senior Fashion Editor of The Telegraph, explained that her go-to outfit in quarantine is the “nap dress”, originally coined by Nell Diamond, founder of Hill House Home. Cronin describes that the nap dress, “can be any dreamy, wafty dress that wouldn’t appear out of place in an am-dram production of Sleeping Beauty”. These are nightgown like dresses that are intended to be worn in the day, predominately made from light fabrics such as cotton and linen. Whether you prefer slip dresses, puff sleeves, billowy, floaty, hanging loose - aim for a style that may resemble a nightgown, and this is the right direction you should be heading in.
Whether you’re on your way to the kitchen for an Aperol Spritz, attending a Zoom BBQ, or on an expedition to the park for a summer stroll - your lounge-dress is the perfect fit for the most practical summer outfit.
